Hi Huw, It is months later but As I was also nearly involved in blognation, the lack of some sort of success has annoyed me as well. In fact Europe is still kind of fragmented. What I got from blognation though was an extraordinary collection of new contacts... the blognation team but also people who were very enthusiastic about what was happening. Anyway, while we have not actually met it has been a real pleasure to have been in touch with you

Hi Huw

I heard about the implosion of the Blognation a while back and I have to say it sucks. Worst I think from what I heard from my contacts in the UK is that big promises were made that people built their WHOLE life around.

I hope you are doing well and you have recovered from that stressful experience.

If you want to talk about the future give a call or drop me an email.

You have my email but you can call me at +447886739200 or co-ordinate a gtalk/skype VoIP.

Cheers and best wishes.

Hey Huw,

If there's one great thing to come from Blognation it's that I got to meet people like you, Ewan and David. Keep blogging, and don't vanish from the scene ;-)

Incidentally I found this post through Blog Friends; we still owe you a drink for all the help you and your Blognation colleagues gave us when we were starting out the project.

All the best,
Jof

I've been thinking about similar things as I start directing a production of Guys And Dolls soon.

I'm fairly certain that the biggest promotional tools for me will be Facebook and MySpace. I'm not sure how useful they will be for you, but those are two tech tools that have bridged the gap into general use and might provide a platform.

You also might want to contact BBC London to see if you can get on their website.

London also has fairly large networks on Upcoming and Eventful, and it may be worth getting the event on both of those.

Also, it may be worth writing local newspapers and seeing if they can pu publish info on their websites about it. Many newspapers maintain online events guides and its just a matter of sending your details to be included.

I would definitely advise against migrating to MT's grid. I've been using since it first launched and i am very disappointed with the service (slow, unreliable). I would however highly recommend their DV hosting product. It's quite expensive compared ($50 p/m), but the service is amazing. You'll have to get your head around Plesk, but it would be worth clubbing together with a few friends to share the hosting server and costs.

Alternatively, have you tried hostgator?

To be honest, I think I might turn this into a Gizbuzz post after all. To treat Zooomr any differently just because it was built by a 19-year-old is showing just the sort of prejudice which we deride.

Re OpenID: I think requiring OpenID is a barrier to adoption in the short term, as I outlined in that Gizbuzz comment a while ago. Zooomr's recognised that, and has regressed because of it. At least they still offer it, though.

RSS support is apparently coming back.

So I'm happy in that respect. :)

Still a bit disappointed about OpenID not being required as it was an important service that was using it as the sole login solution.

Ah well.

As to a community board: that is totally something that Calacanis would do. In fact, if he were a Zooomr user, I'm sure he would have proposed something similar on his blog (and then offered a job at "Project Z" to the person who implemented it :D )
